Video Doorbell vs Traditional Intercom: Which Is Right for You?
Both let you see and speak to visitors before opening the door — but they're built for different kinds of properties and different priorities.

Video doorbells and intercom systems solve the same basic problem — seeing and talking to someone at the door before you open it — but they're aimed at different situations.
Video Doorbells
Built primarily for single-entry homes. Battery or hardwired, connects to your phone via app, and usually includes motion-triggered recording so you get a notification (and a clip) even when you don't answer.
- Best for: standalone houses, single front entry
- Strength: phone notifications anywhere, package/porch monitoring
- Limitation: usually one camera, one entry point
Intercom Systems
Built for properties with a gate, multiple units, or a front door that isn't the only access point that needs monitoring. Wired intercoms integrate with electric gate/door release, and multi-unit intercoms let each unit's tenant answer their own calls independently.
- Best for: gated properties, units/apartments, offices with front-of-house access control
- Strength: can trigger a gate or door release remotely, supports multiple stations/units
- Limitation: more involved install (usually wired), higher upfront cost
Can You Have Both?
Yes — a lot of Adelaide properties run a video doorbell on the front door for everyday deliveries and notifications, plus an intercom on a gate or secondary access point that needs remote release. They're not mutually exclusive, and both can usually be added to an existing property without a full rewire.
